Competition
Arizona Envirothon
Conducted in April, the Arizona Envirothon is a competition comprising three
testing/training stations and an oral presentation. Each team's performance is
evaluated and scored by individuals with field expertise. At the conclusion
of the competition, scores are combined for final ranking and award/prize
distribution. The winning team qualifies for the Canon Envirothon, which is
held each summer.
The testing component consists of three 'ecostations', hosted by a
variety of Arizona's natural resource professionals. While the ecostations
have themes (soils and land use, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology, and
energy/waste management),
the questions asked are representative of a variety of natural resource
concepts, including the annual focus topic. Team coaches are not allowed to
accompany their team or any other team to the testing stations.
The competition will open with the presentation of a real-world
issue that needs to be addressed. Following this group briefing, teams
will retire to a private area and will be asked to identify key factors in
resolving that issue on the poster provided. Teams will have one hour to
complete this task and will then proceed to the field testing as directed.
During the field testing, a team of judges (professionals from Arizona's
natural resource business, industry, and key organizations) will review each
poster and develop questions for additional discussion. Teams will be asked
to defend their posters to one or more judges for a period not to exceed 15
minutes. Team coaches may be present during the oral presentation of their
team only but may offer no suggestion or coaching to their team during this
portion of the competition.
Scores from the testing and oral presentation components are combined to yield
the top three teams overall.
At the awards ceremony, all students receive certificates of participation.
The top three teams at each ecostation receive a team certificate. The
overall top three placing teams are awarded medals and prizes, with the
first place team winning an all-expense-paid trip to the
Canon Envirothon.
Canon Envirothon
To expose students to diverse environmental issues, ecosystems, and
topography, the Canon Envirothon is hosted by a different state or province
each year. In addition to the actual competition, the event also includes
social, cultural, and educational activities organized by the Canon
Envirothon Host Committee.
The Canon Envirothon week-long competition tests students' skills further as
they must learn the specific environment of the host state/province. The
top ten teams at the Canon Envirothon win scholarships ranging from
$1,000-$5,000 per student
